Inishboffin Island.

INIS BÓ FINNE

Tá Inis Bó Finne suite trí chiliméadar ón tír mór i Machaire Rabhartaigh ar chósta thiar-thuaidh Thír Chonaill.

Tá tránna galánta ar an oileán seo agus radharcanna iontacha ón oileán ar an tír mór agus ar na hoileáin thart uirthi. Is fiú cúpla uair a chaitheamh anseo ag spaisteoireacht, ag snámh, nó ag ligean do scíste agus tú ag éisteacht le ceol binn na n-éan agus le fuaim na farraige móire thart ort.

' ....ná radharc níos aoibhne
ná buicéad stáin na spéire ag sileadh
solais ar Inis Bó Finne'

-Cathal Ó Searcaigh

'.... nor is any sight more uplifting than the bright pail of the sky pouring its light down on Inis Bó Finne'

- English translation

An tOileán
The Island

Inishboffin Island or Inis Bó Finne (The Island of the White Cow) is a Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point just 3km off the Donegal coast. It has a significant bird population and is a sanctuary for the corncrake, barnacle geese, choughs, arctic terns and peregrine falcons.

Tá radharcanna galánta le feiceáil ón Mhullach i lár an oileáin: an Earagail agus an Mhucais, Cnoc Fola, Corrán Binne, Toraigh, Inis Dumhaigh agus Inis Beag.

Very few people live on the island all year but some return to fish and harvest the seaweed on the rocks. The views from the island are spectacular.

The east beach at Tobar an Ghlasáin on Inishboffin is a must. Peaceful, tranquil and stunning. Relax and remove yourself from all of life’s noise. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Inis Dumhaigh, Tory Island, The Seven Sisters Mountain Range and the clear blue Atlantic Ocean!

Áiteanna suimiúla:

  • Bothóg Neal Mc Gregor: Ealaíontóir ó Shasana a bhí i Neal Mc Gregor a bhí ina chónaí ar an oileán i mbothóg ag Gob Char’ a’ Ghlasáin ó 1982 go bhfuair sé bás tobann ansin i mí Iúil 1990. Rinneadh clár faisnéise, The Stranger, faoi in 2015. Tá cuid dá shaothar le feiceáil sa bhothóg go fóill – bradán, gliomach agus faoileog greanta sa bhalla.

  • Arthur Kingsley Porter: Ollamh clúiteach in Ollscoil Harvard i Meiriceá a bhí in Arthur Kingsley Porter. Cheannaigh sé Caisleán Ghleann Bheatha i 1929. Thóg sé teach beag saoire in Inis Bó Finne i 1931. Ní bhfuarthas tásc ná tuairisc air ón 8 Iúil 1933 ó chuaigh sé ag spaisteoireacht ar an oileán. Ar bádh é nó ar chuir sé tús le saol úr in áit éigin eile? Tá seanbhallóga a thí cónaithe le feiceáil anseo go fóill.

  • An Constábla Charlie Mac Aoidh: Rugadh agus tógadh ar an oileán é. Ba é an chéad bhall de chuid an RIC a maraíodh in Éirí Amach 1916 i mBaile an Ghearlánaigh i gContae Lú.

  • Cloch an Diabhail: Deirtear gur crúba an diabhail atá le feiceáil sa chloch seo in aice le teach na scoile.

  • Scoilt na hAltóra: Deirtí aifreann anseo in am na bPéindlíthe.

  • An Chloch Bhán: Seo cloch atá suite i lár an oileáin agus a bhfuil baint aici le scéal na bó finne.

  • Tránna: Trá álainn Thobar an Ghlasáin ar an taobh thoir agus Trá chlochach an Earramhnaigh ar an taobh thiar.

  • Teach Pobail Mhuire na nGrás: Ba i 1965 a tógadh an séipéal seo. Roimhe sin, théadh muintir an oileáin trasna na farraige go Machaire Rabhartaigh agus ansin de shiúl cos go Gort a’ Choirce.

  • Beanna: Eibhear dearg agus bán ar an taobh ó thuaidh.

  • Scoil Inis Bó Finne: Tógadh í in 1889 agus druideadh i 1981.

Places of interest:

  • Neal McGregor’s Hut: An extremely talented English artist who came to Inis Bó Finne in 1982 and lived in a small hut at Gob Char’ a’ Ghlasáin where you can still see the salmon/lobster and a seagull carved into stone here. He died suddenly in his hut here in July 1990. Documentary made on his life in 2015 called The Stranger.

  • The old ruins of Arthur Kingsley Porter's cottage on the northwestern side of the beach. He was a renowned Harvard professor and owner of Glenveagh Castle who mysteriously vanished without trace on the island on 8th July 1933 and his body was never found. Did he drown by misadventure or did a boat take him to start a new life for himself elsewhere?

  • The house that Constable Charlie McGee lived in. He was the first RIC casualty of the 1916 Rising.

  • The Devil's Stone: Legend has it that the marks on this stone are of the devil's claws. Found facing Magheroarty past the school house.

  • Scoilt na hAltóra: Where people would say mass/prayers during penal times.

  • The stone beach at Erroonagh with its smooth, egg-like stones of perfect colours, shapes and textures will take your breath away.

  • Ancient farmsteads and field boundaries,

    beautiful caves and sea arches.

  • The White Stone: Situated in the middle of the island. It has links with the story of the white cow.

  • Unusual rock formations in the red and white granite cliffs at the north of the island.

  • The island has a significant bird population and is a sanctuary for the corncrake, barnacle geese, choughs, arctic terns and peregrine falcons.

Walking

Take an invigorating walk around the island while being revitalised by the fresh Atlantic sea breeze. Walk on the fine, golden sands of the east beach at Tobar an Ghlasáin where you can go for a refreshing swim.

Éanacha
Birdwatching

In summer, Inis Bó Finne reverberates to the call of the corncrake, a bird species that has vanished from most parts of Ireland. The island holds 10-20 calling males each summer, an important concentration of this globally endangered species.

Peregrine falcons and choughs regularly visit the island, which is inside a candidate Special Area Conservation. In summer, some 30-70 breeding pairs of Arctic terns are distributed between Inis Bó Finne and Inis Dumhaigh. The latter island holds colonies of cliff-nesting seabirds, including fulmars, shags and gulls and a colony of eider ducks.

In winter, Inis Bó Finne is visited by an internationally important flock of some 400 barnacle geese, occasionally accompanied by Greenland white-fronted geese.

Windsurfing & Kayaking

The spectacular bay and beach at nearby Machaire Rabhartaigh is popular with windsurfers and sea-kayakers.

Paidir Mhuintir Inis Bó Finne

A Chroí Ró-Naofa Íosa, molaimid Thú,
Le láidreacht ár n-intinne ‘s le haoibhneas ár gcroí:
Go moch ag ár n-obair ‘s go mall ag ár só,
A Chroí dhílis mhilis, ná scar linn go deo.

Nuair a bhíos muid ar siúl ar an tsáile anonn
Ag cosnú ár mbeatha ar bharraibh na dtonn,
Bí againn i gcónaí a’ tabhairt dúinn uchtach láidir,
'S ag cur rath ar ár n-obair, mar rinne tú le Peadar.

Inár n-aistir go minic go beannaibh an Chorráin
Is ó sin amach siar go hoileán fiáin Thoraigh
As gach contúirt go bhfaighe muid amach go tír mór –
A Chroí Naofa Íosa, tar chugainn le cabhair.

Ar ár dteaghlaigh ‘s ár dtithe cuir séan agus sonas,
Agus réitigh dúinn fhéin as gach buaireamh is pionós
Is isteach i do ríocht, a Dhia mhór na cruinne,
Tabhair sean agus óg in Inis Bó Finne.

A Prayer for the People
of Inishbofin

O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, we praise Thee,
with all the strength of our minds, and the joy of our hearts,
Early at our labour and late at our leisure,
O Faithful and Sweet Heart, do not part from us ever.

Whilst away sailing the great seas,
Defending our lives on the crest of the waves,                            Be with us always, giving us strength and courage,
prospering our work, as you did for St. Peter.

Oft on our sea voyages as far as Horn Head,
And from there, westerly to the wild Island of Tory,
From all dangers deliver us, until we reach dry land,
O Sacred Heart of Jesus, come to our aid.

Bless our families and homes, with success and happiness,
And deliver us from all trials and tribulations,
And into Your kingdom, O great God of the Universe,
Bring the elderly and youth of Inis Bó Finne.
